My Students

I teach the most amazing eighth graders! They are fun, hardworking, smart, and ready to learn! They come from a variety of ethnicities, homes, and backgrounds and they all come together to collaborate, work hard, and better our community.

Many students enter my classroom without a love for reading, but few leave in the same condition.

My students enjoy First Chapter Friday, where I read the first chapter of a book to them. First Chapter Friday helps kiddos become interested in books they might not pick on their own. Students keep lists of books they want to read in their reading notebooks, and they often share book recommendations with one another. In order to continue building a community of readers, I need to keep a well-stocked classroom library.

My Project

Our class keeps growing and growing. We have an integrated class with several special needs students. We currently have five students sharing a small table, which means students are crowded and having a hard time working. Several chairs have broken in the past few weeks, so we’re running out of places for students to sit. We need two new tables and eight new chairs.

Adding these tables and chairs to our classroom will allow students to sit in cooperative groups.

Working cooperatively in a small group allows each student to contribute to the completion of the task. When groups get too big, each student is able to participate less and still accomplish the task. Having these extra tables will allow us to decrease group sizes and increase participation.
