Every preschool teacher will tell you that their class is full of energy, and ours is no exception! We currently have 16 4-year-olds in our room, most getting their first school experience. Our program serves low-income and at risk families in a relatively rural area of northern Michigan.
Our classroom may be small, but our kids have big ideas!
In just the first few weeks of school, we've had children creating 3D dinosaurs in the art area, setting up a stage and giving a concert (complete with a backup band!) in music and movement, and asking for gloves to use in the discovery area because the "potions" they were creating were "hot."
Our daily objective is learning through play! The children ask questions, investigate the world around them, and learn how to interact with their peers, both in the classroom and outdoors.
My Project
We live in northern Michigan, so we're used to cold weather and make sure we have enough outdoor gear for all of our students, but sometimes, it's just too cold! When the temperature drops below 10 degrees with wind chills (which can be for weeks at a time) we stay inside and do gross motor activities in our classroom or in the hallway. We have no other space to use, and, right now, no equipment.
Portable equipment will give my students an opportunity to expend their energy and build upon their gross motor development, regardless of the weather!
The Stepping Domes and Pogo Jumper help them work on balance. The soccer ball and goal allows for cooperative play and development of gross motor manipulation skills. The scarves can be used for props during dancing activities. Plus, it's all fun!
