it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are a Title I school where funding for the most basic needs is a struggle. We are officially a PBL (Project Based Learning) school. My students are tenacious, tactile learners that love to explore and learn. Although budgeting is always limited, my firm belief is that my students deserve a rich education.
We are learning all about sustainability and how we can supply our own healthy and nutritious foods.
What better way to introduce ourselves to this concept then to grow our own food and to use our food as data as we look at which is better to help us grow a healthy sustainable vegetable- natural sunlight from sitting on the windowsill or artificial light from the AeroGarden. Students will research and hypothesize which light has a greater effect on the growing tomatoes natural or artificial light. Students will observe, record and record their finding weekly, using the scientific process and their work as scientists.
By the end of the project, students will be able to report in detail which light is more effective for sustainability. We will pot and grow tomatoes in planters and at the same time grow tomatoes in the AeroGarden. The culminating activity will be for the students to compare and present their findings and finally eat their research, which will introduce this healthy sustainable food to some students who may have been reluctant in the past to try this beautiful veggie.
