Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever met a real author? Did you know students can become authors? My 95% poverty students answered no to both these questions. "May you write what needs to be written," is a quote from the Freedom Writers Diary. My students want to read and write what needs to be written. You can help them.
My 95% poverty students want to succeed.
They want to move out of their homeless neighborhoods and projects and become someone one day. The inspiring stories they have read from the Freedom Writers Diary have inspired them to work harder and make a difference in this world. They live with many of the same challenges faced in the Diaries: homelessness, abuse, incarcerated parents, single family homes, drugs, crime and violence.
My students attend public school in a town surrounded by those who have, yet they lack so much. They drive by nice homes to go into a shelter or a project. They see others with books of their own, yet they own none. When book order forms are passed out, they look, but they can't purchase. Our school is located in a beautiful neighborhood where less than 5% of our students actually live. When they ride the bus past the nice, middle class, manicured lawns, they hope and dream that one day they, too, will live in such houses.
My Project
"Teach with your heart!" This is Ms. Erin Gruwell's motto and my motto! I am honored to be one of only 300 teachers who are Freedom Writer Teachers. I have been sharing the Freedom Writers Diary with my class. The green covers open and they are spell-bound as the words of teenagers flow off the pages. They look in amazement as I show them pictures of me with some of the actual students. They wonder how they could they ever meet a real author. They wonder if they could write a book too. In December, Ms. Gruwell and FW's will attend a play my students are performing. Think of how amazing it will be to be able to hold their own copy of the book and have the Freedom Writer student authors sign their copy!
My students need 40 writing journals, marker, and 35 copies of The Freedom Writer's Diary and other books for authors to sign when we meet them in December. My students are learning that writing and literature can move them out of their impoverished lives. As they write their own journals and books, they will know that they, too, can become published authors. Being able to keep their books forever and share with others is life changing!
It was inspiring and life-changing when I met Erin and the Freedom Writers.
I can't imagine how life-changing it will be for my students to meet them as well. They need someone to look up to. Getting signed copies of their books will be a point in their lives they will never forget! They deserve to have this chance to own a signed copy of the Freedom Writers Diary. I believe that my students can achieve and, one day, we may be all reading books that they wrote!
