Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bright and enthusiastic students ready to learn. My class is located in a low income area. A large percentage of the student population qualifies for free lunch. My students are not provided with opportunities to experience new things.
My class is composed of 24 students in an ICT (Integrated Cooperative Teaching) class.
My students are bright and very dedicated students. My students need real life experiences in order to make real life connections. I would like to provide that exposure for them. I want to get them ready for the future. I would like to expose my students to new content such as "Tolerance." I would like all my students to be provided the opportunity to experience and learn more about tolerance. Even though the school is located in a low income area, I would like to provide the opportunity to try reading books that model tolerance for young children to enjoy. My students will discover a new world of tolerance and compassion while learning using books.
My Project
I would like my students to learn about tolerance using books such as Dr. Seuss books and Separate Is Never Equal by Sylvia Mendez. Even though my students experience and are exposed to different situations in their community, I will like to demonstrate and model tolerance and compassion to others. I would like my students to have the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. I would like to model through books that people have different opinions and ideas and demonstrate how people and characters deal with those situations. What better way than to do this in a fun and creative way such as reading? My students enjoy read alouds in class which is why I am requesting these books. In addition to this, I would like to create art activities that connect to tolerance. This is why I am requesting arts and crafts materials and a cricut air machine that will allow my students to create art activities that will help them learn more about tolerance. Such activities that encourage students to reflect on their individual cultures and histories, their backgrounds, the things they grew up with (some that may have been in their control and others that they had no choice about), and their values. In the end, students will begin to enlarge their perspective and recognize diversity of belief and background.
