I teach at a Title 1 school in Southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. My first graders are kind, curious, and feisty.
Teaching first grade, I've learned that 6 and 7 year olds are natural historians.
They care deeply about grand concepts like equality and justice. They care about smaller details, like the name of Ruby Bridges' mom. And they notice patterns, even though they sometimes need guidance to interpret them. Last year we spent a lot of time discussing questions that were equally humorous and heartbreaking like, "Why didn't Barack Obama just help Harriet Tubman?"
My Project
My goal is to use these books to discuss how characters and historical figures overcame segregation, violence, and discrimination. My school's population is almost entirely Latino and black, and I believe my students will see themselves in many of these stories.
I chose these texts specifically to share the stories of people who are under represented in history and children's fiction, as well as in my school's curriculum and shelves.
The book list includes the true stories of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and journalist Ida B. Wells. It includes fictional stories of a girl with two dads, and a boy living in the US while his mom is in Mexico. Some books introduce children to history through historical fiction, like Freedom on the Menu, a book about the Greensboro sit ins.
As we read them, my plan is to create an in-class timeline on our wall so that students can place historical people and events in context. It is my hope that they will gain inspiration and power from the struggles and triumphs we read about.
