Together We Rise: Children's Books for AAPI Month and Juneteenth

My Project

My second graders are curious, thoughtful, and eager to learn about the world around them. They come from diverse backgrounds and love hearing stories that reflect both their own experiences and those of others.

This project will provide picture books that celebrate Juneteenth and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month—important opportunities to recognize history, culture, and identity in ways that are engaging and age-appropriate.

Juneteenth honors the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Through stories that center Black voices and history, my students will learn about the struggle for freedom, the power of community, and the importance of remembrance.

AAPI Heritage Month is a chance for my students to explore the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. From folktales to biographies and contemporary stories, these books will help foster empathy, awareness, and appreciation for the AAPI community.

These picture books will not only enhance our classroom library, but will also spark rich discussions, build cultural awareness, and help every student feel seen and valued. Your support will bring these powerful stories into our classroom and help my students grow as readers, thinkers, and compassionate global citizens.
