Drum circles are a fantastic approach to team building, so much so that corporations sometimes hire drum circle facilitators to come in and help their employees develop a closer team feeling. Children can benefit greatly from learning to play drums in a community of their peers as well. In my experience, this is particularly true in an inner-city environment, where children far too often resolve minor conflicts with shouting and violence. I'm an elementary school music teacher looking to teach drumming within my music program at PS 90x in the Bronx. To do this, I need about 25 Djembe drums. These are African hand drums that the kids can learn to play very quickly. The funding is, of course, difficult to obtain in an inner-city school (over 90% of our students qualify for the free-lunch program, to give you an idea of the economics of the community). So, I'm hoping that some generous donors will provide either their full or partial help towards this goal. Whatever you can contribute is greatly appreciated. By the way, I teach the entire 4th grade, which is about 260 students. My classes are usually made up of about 20 - 25 students, so I need about 25 drums in total. However, I'm looking to build that in small amounts. Whatever amount you can contribute towards this goal will make a huge difference. Each Djembe drum costs $99. So far, I've obtained 8 of the 25 I need. My students have not had a music program before this year and they have been very enthusiastic about it now that they do have it. There is a lot of talent in these children and you can help provide the opportunity for them to develop it. Thank you.
