Together Everyone Achieves More....When We Work as a T.E.A.M.
My students need team work activities such as Legos, K'nex, giant building blocks and magnetic building tiles so they can work with peers on new creations.
My students are the most amazing, kind, caring and welcoming students. We have 25 learners in our room and 12 of those learners are English language learners. We have students from Africa, China, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, and America. We speak lots of different languages and we work on accepting everyone for the uniqueness they bring to our classroom.
We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone that comes into our room.
The diversity in our room opens our eyes to strengths that we see in each other! We all work hard to make sure everyone feels included and safe, so we share lots of neat stories that enhance our learning!!
Another aspect we work on in our classroom is teamwork. With the diverse languages, culture expectations, and levels of respect we really have to work together. It takes each and every student/teacher to help others learn how to be respectful and kind to others. It also takes lots of practice and learning from our mistakes. We own or mistakes, apologize if needed, and share how we will handle that same situation later. By the middle of the year, most of the students can do this without teacher
My Project
In our school we work on showing three words: respectful, responsible and safe. These words are very difficult for our English language learners to understand and show. One way we work on these is with some in class choice time during the week where all students have to work in a small group on the same activity. A few examples include building things, making patterns, creating posters, or playing a game.
Providing my students with the opportunity to work with Legos, K'Nex, puzzles, magnetic tiles, checkers, and Jenga blocks will help my students learn to problem solve and listen to each other's thoughts and ideas while strategizing how to build something or solve the task at hand.
In order for the task to be completed they will have to work together and part of this means teaching each other how to treat peers the way they want to be treated, taking turns, using kind words, encouraging each other, and explaining how unkind actions make them feel.
This time is not teacher led, it is student led. It creates a sense of ownership for their actions and teaches them how to deal with different situations. These life skills will continue to impact their learning throughout their education and life.
