Students who are placed in Intensive Reading have not passed the state standardized reading assessment and need additional instruction, beyond that of their peers, so they can work towards reading on grade level. This deficit follows them to all subject areas and makes even the subjects that they love more difficult.
In my classroom, I believe that today's struggling readers can be tomorrow's leaders.
One of the biggest problems struggling readers face is that they claim to not like reading. This creates a vicious cycle because the only way they are going to get any better at reading is by actually doing it; however, they must first discover the genre or author who ignites that spark. They need to find that book that they cannot put down. The book that has them laughing out loud and crying. The book that dares them to dream.
My Project
With teaching Intensive Reading, students are required to read twenty minutes a night. To ensure that all students have access to quality and current titles, a well stocked classroom library offering plenty of variety is crucial. Many students do not have access to books at home while others are not able to check books out at the school library due to fines that they cannot pay.
Every student deserves to find a book they love!
That is why I strategically chose the 6th grade collection that includes 10-12 books from multiple book sets including non-fiction, popular titles, classic fiction, as well as engaging titles on lower reading levels. I supplemented that collection with other well loved titles such as "Hoot" and "Walk Two Moons" to round out the collection. Other requested titles include Because of Mr. Terupt, A Wrinkle in Time, Hidden Figures, Wonder, Auggie & Me, I Am Malala, The Maze Runner, One Crazy Summer, and James and the Giant Peach.
Why so many titles? Well, I have around one hundred twenty students so the more titles and books I have to offer, the more students that will be able to read books from the classroom library at one time.
