My students need books that are on their level to read. Many of our book bins are low on books or empty. The students need new and interesting books to read independently.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As teachers we always try to inspire out students. One of the things we like to share with how students is how important it is to learn how to read. Life is full of uncertainties. What you possess today you may loose tomorrow, EXCEPT the power of reading. As Margaret Fuller once said,
Today A Reader, Tomorrow A Leader!
As teachers in a low-income/high poverty school district, our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they may face, we believe in empowering our students with knowledge, and the power of reading.
My Project
Our students are curious. They ask questions, observe the world around them, and have a great love of reading.
They enjoy reading books from our classroom library, but they do not all have books at home that they can read outside of school time and discuss with their Reading Buddies.
We lead the Reading Buddies Program in partnership with the nonprofit organization, Literacy Inc. (LINC). The LINC Reading Buddies Program pairs older students with younger students for 20+ sessions of one-on-one reading. LINC partners with local schools or after-school sites and works with administrators and faculty to provide the LINC Reading Buddy Program. The one-on-one pairing improves cross-grade relationships, builds confidence for both readers, and provides the older partner with experience organizing materials. Focusing on reading aloud to each other, followed by an organized critical response (oral and written), students create a reading goal and maintain a literacy portfolio that tracks progress.
