My Students

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ~ Dr. Seuss

I am a second grade teacher at an urban school in Indiana.

My school community is comprised of financially struggling families of all races, languages, and religions, and extremely hardworking teachers and staff. We build readers, writers, thinkers, scientists, historians, and mathematicians. As a community we are trying to give all the students attending our school an opportunity for a better future.

My Project

As a teacher, we have many goals to accomplish with our students. The job that I believe is most essential is helping my students build identities as readers and writers. The best way to become a better reader is to read. The best way to become a better writer is to write.

By connecting to my students through books, I can foster a love of reading and help them define who they are and what books they love.

Through book suggestions, reading large volumes of text and making every moment a readable moment, I help this reading identity take shape.

From these pages, students take their love of authors, genre, and stories and begin to use what they've read to become an author. Just like with reading, students will be supported as they write book after book and hone their craft.

My students will use these book bags to house and carry all the books they are currently reading. Their portable style allows them to read at their seats, around the room, or on the go. Once they are inspired by the many titles they have read, the blank books will allow them to try out some of the techniques their favorite authors use. This authentic practice of reading and writing is essential to their growth. The goal is lofty, but the result is everlasting.
