Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year my kindergarten classroom is composed of twenty-five students: 18 girls and 7 boys. My students are energetic, curious, and eager to learn. They hail from different backgrounds, but they love being able to learn about the world around them together.
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.” – Plutarch.
My students have a million burning questions and such an immense desire to learn. As a teacher, there is no greater satisfaction than listening to them as they talk about all the things they are learning and seeing the smile on their face as they do so.
My Project
Most of my students begin their reading journey in kindergarten. While they likely have had someone read to them regularly in the past, in my class they begin to read on their own.
Have you ever seen the twinkle in the eye of a child who realizes he/she understands printed words?
This is something I get to experience on a regular basis in kindergarten, but I want to keep that spark ignited by offering my students non-fiction texts, such as books about the weather or following rules, as well as fictional texts, such as El monstruo de colores, that pique their interests.
These books will serve as read-aloud texts or as texts to be featured in our "monthly picks" bookshelf, which highlights books related to a theme, holiday, or author we may be discussing. The book ends would help showcase our growing collection of Piggie and Elephant books, which my students love reading. With your help, I hope to continue to foster a love of reading in my classroom. Thank you for considering our project!
