Help me give my students more selection in our classroom library. I have been incorporating SSR time in my classroom and am always looking expand their options.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in an urban high school where economic constraints hinder their learning. We are lacking many materials needed to help them succeed in the English classroom. The district offers free breakfast and free lunch to our students. Many of the students read below grade level and this can impact their motivation in class.
My students face a lot of adversity both in and out of the classroom which leads to issues academically and socially.
Many of our disengaged students are chronically absent or tardy, meaning students are missing 10 percent or greater of the total number of days during the school year including excused, unexcused, out-of-school suspensions, and in-school suspensions.
They are hardworking and eager to learn. They need tools that will help make them college and career ready once they leave these halls. My students are creative, humorous and diverse and they deserve a chance to learn.
My Project
Classroom libraries are an integral part of any classroom. While teaching high school English, one of my biggest challenges is getting my students to read a book of their own choosing. I have been researching and developing a list of Young Adult best sellers that I think my students would get excited to read.
Silent Sustained Reading is one of the few experiences students have to explore the world of literature without being told what to read.
Having an expansive library with all different genres, authors and characters to choose from will help to spark a love of reading in my students.
