My Students

Our community has a high ratio of low socioeconomic backgrounds, and many of my students come from blended or nontraditional families. In my classroom, I try to make reading a major focus to our everyday learning. Whether I am reading to the class, the students are reading for stamina, or they are reading to pass the time after completing another assignment, we read a lot! In some cases, the only reading they are exposed to is in the classroom.

My classroom is full of very inquisitive first graders.

At this age, sitting in the same place all day isn't really option. My students love to get up, move to different locations, and work in groups with their peers. First grade is such a pivotal year in the reading process, so I want to maximize student reading readiness by giving them even more opportunities to work in small groups and ensure every tiny voice becomes a big participant!

My Project

Small reading groups and literature circles give students a quiet place to gather to read and learn together. Students can be mentors to their peers, collaborate their ideas, discuss and respond to stories, and ask questions during their time in these groups.

This teaching table allows room for me to comfortably lead small group reading instruction and interventions while sitting with my students, and the Qball microphone encourages every student to become a more active participant.

This time is vital in identifying student reading levels and who might be at-risk, needing further interventions by support staff.

A table such as this one allows me to interact with my students individually or a few at a time. The Qball microphone will hopefully entice my students to become more engaged and eager to read.
