Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader

Help me give my students books that would encourage them to become strong and avid readers.

My Students

My first-grade class is made up of 20 first graders who are all English language learners and come in each day eager to learn. Many of the students are children of immigrant parents who do not speak English and are able to provide them with limited academic support. Many of the students come from low-income backgrounds which make it difficult for families to contribute to the cost of purchasing resources and books for the classroom. My desire is to provide my students with the tools and resources they need in the classroom to further enhance their learning.

My Project

Reading is a necessity. You cannot survive in this digital world without the ability to read. But for some students, reading is very difficult and the thought of reading a book is a daunting one. Overcoming this fear opens the door for students to practice and master reading.

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." Frederick Douglass made this statement over a century ago, and I believe that it rings true today with my struggling readers especially many who are English Language Learners.

Graphic novels are not threatening to children. They are colorful and the pictures guide student comprehension, which can lead to easier decoding of words. Can you help bring these graphic novels to my students? Can you help inspire them to read?
