My students are kindergartners in San Jose, California from a variety of ethnic cultures. Many are English language learners who come into school each and every day eager to learn. They are a passionate group of students who in a short amount of time are already demonstrating responsibility, respect, empathy, and persistence and are learning to advocate for themselves and their families. Many of our kinder students are from low-income families, however, their families are very involved and proactive in their children's future. We would like to provide our students with more resources to help relieve our families from financial pressures regarding educational items. Although only in kinder, our students are beginning their voyage in the educational system and starting them with the correct resources and opportunities to learn is going to allow them to continue and pursue their own aspirations as they continue to grow.
As a school community, we want to instill a love of reading within our students. One project we want to participate in is "Read for the Record." This program is a national campaign to bring young children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all over the world. Allowing each kinder student to have a copy of the book "Maybe Something Beautiful" creates a sense of joy, inclusion, and whole-group participation in Read for the Record. Also, students can take the books home, read with their families, and continue building on the foundation that we are instilling, which is to love reading!
