This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine walking into a classroom full of eager, elementary aged students and seeing a few students in small group working on various concepts, but not quite understanding how to proceed. This describes the students that I work with during the day.
All of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch and lack many of the additional funding sources needed to complete home libraries.
Because of the lack of environmental print and home libraries, my students are a little behind in reading. As a result, the students benefit from small group instruction throughout the school day.
My Project
My first few years of teaching I sent home daily reading logs. It proved to be less successful than I anticipated because many students don’t have books or home libraries. I then began providing books for the students out of our classroom library. This proved to be quite successful in boosting their reading scores. Reading is such an integral part of our student’s school day and should be incorporated into their home life as well. It is crucial that they develop print awareness and a strong reading foundation. I would like to provide the students with age and grade level appropriate texts that they can take home, read and return.
For this project, I'm requesting decodable readers and Learn to Read sets.
These materials will help my students learn to read in a nontraditional fun and engaging way. I am so excited about this class library project initiative and hope that you can help!
