I have 25 amazing students in a Title I school. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives. However, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My goal is to expose my first graders to many fiction and nonfiction stories to strengthen their comprehension skills and fluency.
My student's goals are to progress through many guided reading levels while in first-grade, but if they do not have book choices that will interest them, they do not want to read. I have a small amount of books in my classroom that has seen better days. Many have literally fallen apart because they are so old.
My Project
The books will help my students increase their guided reading levels, and with books that interest them, they will want to read more and more. "The More We Read, The More We'll Know" is a famous quote by Dr. Seuss and it is so true. The more my students read, the more they will learn.
Many of my students and their parents have expressed to me that they do not have many or any books at home, and getting to the library is difficult.
That is why it is a goal of mine to make my classroom as print rich as possible. It will allow my students to gain exposure and background knowledge and help them to become better readers themselves.
