My Students
My students are a reflection of me! I teach at the place where I was inspired to teach, work among some of the same teachers who taught me, and teach out of the same books that were outdated when I was there!
Our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent.
Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction without the requisite tools to teach our students.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Although, the opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population, they are all dreamers, and they all deserve the best!
My Project
My ninth graders need literature that they can make real world connections to. The colorful supplies will motivate and help my students complete fun, creative, and eye-catching projects that demonstrate critical thinking!
My focus is to engage my ninth graders with interesting material today, that will inspire the love of reading for life!
The articles in the "Choices" magazine subscription are informative, helpful, and instructive. Reading about other peer experiences will help my students realize that they are not the only people dealing with issues, help is available, and that there is hope.
"Forged by Fire" is an excellent high interest novel! Students love this novel and in the past, students have even asked to read it again. The problem is that we only have enough books for 1 class set, and we need 3 class sets.
Reading is an integral part of culture in 21st-Century American society; we read texts, advertisements, emails, books, articles, nutrition labels... the list goes on. In high-poverty area schools such as ours, students are often 4-6 reading levels below grade. The texts in the classroom often do not engage the students; the stories in the textbooks even less. Almost every day a student asks, "Why can't I read something that I get to choose?
Kids know reading is important, but they often feel discouraged by their deficit. These materials will give them tools to boost their confidence and their skills! Your generous donation will influence students for years to come.
