“Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.” – Margaret Fuller

My students need books that are as diverse as they are, bins to keep those books in, and materials to make the day run smoothly.

My Students

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

― Margaret Fuller

My classroom is located in Washington State at a Title 1 school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At Hazel Valley, 80-85% of students qualify for free and reduced school lunch. There are so many experiences and learning we wish we could have with our students if only we had the means.

My Project

Please help get books for my students! Our classroom library lacks books as diverse as our students are. The books I'm asking to purchase, with your help, are a better representation of my students. I'm asking for books on strong accomplished women, amazing people of color, books to better understand and build empathy for people with disabilities, and everyday stories with characters that match the diverse race and cultural backgrounds of students in my class. By reading about these role models and everyday people, students will be motivated to set goals and reach them.

“Books are the training weights of the mind.” -Epictetus I've also included some exemplary mentor texts in my request.

During both our reading and writing workshops students read and write books of many genres. I need the best mentor books to help my students understand opinion, poetry, informational, and narrative pieces. The better the examples I have to share and read with my students the better they will learn, analyze, and try on the different craft moves utilized in these genres.

I am also asking for some other items for our classroom. We need book bins to hold all our new amazing books! Ikea has discontinued the cardboard bins I have used year after year and now there is nothing at a price point I can alone buy for my kids to use. To go with the new books and bins we will also need labels to categorize our books. I am also asking for a pencil sharpener that is quiet and non disruptive. Ours is broken and sometimes we just need pencils sharpened right then and there.
