This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are funny, bright, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and caring. I feel so lucky to have been their teacher now since last year, when they were all kindergartners. In the time that we've been together, I've seen each and every one of my students be flexible and tenacious when facing a challenge, big and small.

Every day that we spend in the classroom, I'm amazed by their flexibility and tenacity.

They rise to the occasion everyday despite the worries they have about staying safely distant and masked, about whether their loved ones will be okay, and even about their classmates who have fallen ill. My students love to read, they have fun singing and dancing when we have brain breaks, and they enjoy getting outside as much as they can to run around and just be kids! Even now that the cold weather has arrived, they still jump at the chance to go outside, though sometimes they don't have enough warm layers (or even one layer) to protect them from the elements.

My Project

It gets cold in the Pacific Northwest and a light sweater is not enough to keep an adult body warm when it's cold and rainy out. It can take a lot of mental and physical energy to focus on anything other than the physical discomfort of being cold. So, when I look out at my classroom and see that some of my students don't have a hat to help retain their body heat, or don't have gloves, or whose jackets are too thin for the low temps we've had lately, I know that their learning is being negatively impacted.

These beanies and hand warmers will keep my students warm throughout the winter months, especially now that our classroom windows stay open to increase air circulation, which is part of the layered approach to reducing COVID-19 risk and keeping our schools open.
