Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4-6 Special Education students are incredible! They are learning to become proficient English speakers, readers, writers, mathematicians, and independent thinkers. They work hard to understand their disabilities are not labels marking them as less. They learn everyone has challenges, and one of their challenges means they need different ways to learn new information.
These students come from a low socioeconomic neighborhood that is often chaotic.
Keeping our classroom organized and predictable is one of their biggest keys to success. This also means my students have limited access to programs in the community after school.
My Project
Each year, schools from around the county compete in Battle of the Books. This year, my students want to compete, too. There are 25 titles on the BOTB list, and I have requested two copies of each book. Along with our access to audiobooks, this puts us in a viable position to participate with other schools.
Participating in a county-wide event focused on reading is an inclusive opportunity for my special education students to show their stuff!
Over the past two years, they have become capital R Readers and are devouring books. They are excited to get started on this list!
