To the Market We Go

Help me give my students this play money and foods so that we can go to the market and learn about financial literacy.

My Students

I teach a special education class in a Title I school. I serve thirty students from kindergarten to fifth grade. Their disabilities range from learning disabilities to visual impairments. They come from diverse backgrounds. Some students have limited verbal abilities. Five students have limited motor skills, which limits their writing ability. Most are mainstreamed during the day into regular education classrooms. They are at least two years behind their peers. Many come from impoverished backgrounds with little parental involvement.

When working with my students and other classrooms, it is exhilarating to watch them all learn about each other.

My Project

This project introduces financial literacy in a fun hands-on way, emphasizing needs and wants. This will enable students to work on critical thinking skills as they decide what they need and want.

Play money will be given out in the morning during circle time to the students.

Much like real life students will each be given a certain amount of dollars, based on the career they draw from the bag of careers. Each career will be assigned a salary. They will be given an envelop with there money in it. The stations will mirror vendors and sellers at a market where goods are sold. Students will have to make decisions and purchase various items.

At the end of market time we will come together and discuss what they purchases and why they made the decisions they made. We will count how much money each student has left. We will ponder and think about our purchases. Were they good purchases? Could I have done anything differently? Should I have saved some money? We will have a discussion about needs and wants and goods and services and why saving money is a good idea,
