My Students
As a Pre-K teacher in a low income area, my students are inquisitive, curious active explorers and are vessels ready to learn. My students learn mostly through exploration and play. Language is developed when I listen to and speak with students during center time and during small groups. I also make sure to have individual conversations with each child throughout the day. My students are encouraged to talk about what they are doing during the day and to tell simple stories.
Many of my students are from single parent households and they receive free breakfast and lunch as part of the Head Start Program.
Some of my children have disabilities ranging from hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, speech and language difficulties. I try to engage all students by getting to know and understand each student so that I can help them learn best.
My Project
For students to be able to sit on a decorative, educational rug during valuable learning time is essential. Sitting on a rug allows students to take charge of their learning and make appropriate choices that work best for them. I want to ensure that my students are comfortable because it helps keep them focused and is an essential component in motivating them during our meetings on the rug. The rug I chose has colored squares which will allow students to decide where they would like to sit. The rug is also big enough so that all 20 of my students can sit spaciously with incident but will allow them to have their own space. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and are able to have great conversations during our discussions and read-alouds.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their discussions when given a choice of where to sit.
The rug that I selected will help my students by giving them something to comfortably sit on. Students are also able to play various activities on the rug. They can build with blocks and play puzzles. This allows them options to make more effective learning choices.
I have seen how making choices is important for my preschoolers and by receiving this rug, it can positively affect my students abilities and demeanor which will allow them to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
