My students need series books that are high interest at lower reading levels. These books are a combination of sets to read in group and ones to borrow for home reading!

My Students
We are a Community School serving 400 students in a large inner city school district that serves almost 10,000 students
Our diverse students come to reading with a variety of attitudes and motivations about reading, but over the course of our time together, develop a true love of reading, at all levels.
80% of our students are reading below grade level, some significantly. Some are English Language Learners, some have moved from other districts, some have faced trauma. All are amazingly capable! Getting the right books in their hands makes a difference.
My Project
As reading teachers, our students are primarily older Elementary School Students (3rd - 5th) who are the lowest level readers. For our 5th graders that can mean that they are reading at a first grade reading level.
These series books allow for the students to be excited about what they are reading and develop independence as readers.
We start by reading the first of the series book together, talking about the characters, setting, plot and what we expect to find in the rest of the series. By establishing this groundwork, the kids go off and read the rest of the series on their own. Taking what was once hard and turning it into fun enjoyable reading!
