To Read or Not to Read to Meet CCSS? We Want to Read!
My students need 36 books to improve deep reading, close reading, discussion techniques, and text citation using an on-level class set. Maniac McGee meets CCSS for all.
Students are in a rut with a lack of reading materials besides an outdated anthology. To meet CCSS and provide an opportunity for all to be involved in a grade-level book that meets the rigor of CC, we would appreciate a book that would serve multiple teaching techniques and involve all students.
Many of my students come from homes of poverty.
Often the parents don't have the background to be able to help the students excel nor to motivate them. The students are looking for books that are interesting and hold their attention. Maniac McGee offers so many ways to meet the CCSS and the students would relate to his situation and become involved in their learning. Our classroom is a mix of students who are Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, and African-American. We bond together as a class family and value each others' differences supporting those who are below grade level, on grade level and those who are above grade level. We would like to have a gook that we can all use to stimulate discussions and practice common core standards. Our school is struggling for materials and with all the cuts are not given money to spend to update materials and provide the students with award winning books.
My Project
Our classroom would use this book set as one segment of our reading curriculum spending part of our literacy time reading and discussing the story. This book would enhance speaking and listening skills, close reading, and deeper reading for understanding and especially analyzing how a character changes over time. These are all standards and teaching techniques asked of teachers using CCSS. Students who struggle would be involved in grade-level material and able to hear and be a part of classroom discussions ensuring success of all. Students would also be reading a story and learning to show empathy and tie in our school's study of Steven Covey's 7 Habits. Having this book would become a "Win-Win" situation for all involved and best yet remain for the following year.
Our classroom would be improved by having a class set of books to encourage "accountable talk," close reading and deeper reading, all of which are required under the CCSS.
Students will observe first hand through a book how a character can change over time and give many of them hope for their future by being able to relate to Maniac McGee. It would allow the students to realize they are in charge of their life and can overcome any challenge if they try.
