This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a Title I school. My kids are rich in personality. Our neighborhood feels residential and calm. My kids are full of energy and creativity. Our school reflects the “browning of America.” My kids are “many splendored” beings. Having a love for reading is not the norm for all my kids, but I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it so!
My kids crave learning and are anxious to do well.
They are open to new ideas and are willing to do the hard work of mining those new topics. Be it Shakespeare or the Odyssey, poetry or narrative writing, my kids constantly rise to the challenge of being/doing better. I have no doubt that with the right resources and time, a large population of my kids will foster a love of reading.
My Project
Statistics and research shows that better readers make better writers, and better writers make better better humans, and better humans make Earth a better place to live! Assisting students to read is actually developing better citizens who will give back twofold what they have gained from the learning experience.
Putting books into the hands of children is like giving them a first class ticket onto the express train of their imagination.
The sky's the limit to what adventure, village, mystery, or universe to which their reading will transport them. Giving students opportunities to "get lost" in a good book is one way to nurture not only their literacy, but it is also a direct link to their creativity. This is why I am requesting this list of books.
