Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is a high crime, low income community with 97% of the students Hispanic/Latino, and 3% African American. We have been receiving several refugee students and diverse learners from Mexico and Central America.
Students are eager to learn so it is crucial that we are able to create a diverse learning environment that is accommodating to all.
Every student deserves to feel comfortable and welcomed at school and in their classroom(s). A safe and welcoming environment will promote learning and a sense of familiarity.
As a first year teacher, I am eager to accomplish this for them. In order to do so, students need a library that includes English and Spanish books that are relevant to students' and their cultures. A reading corner can provide a space where students can utilize their books and put their skills to good use.
Every child has the capability to be great. It is our job, as teachers, to equip them with the resources in order to help them succeed.
My Project
Many of my students are struggling readers and/or do not speak English. Our library is in need of a makeover. We have bookshelves that are falling apart so we have relocated our books into bins on tables. Unfortunately, the books in our library are bit antiquated or not in the language students need.
In order to promote reading and increase fluency, I want to create a reading corner complete with new books and furniture.
Their new and improved library will not only meet their interests, but their needs as readers, as well. It will create a fun reading environment which will encourage more students to pick up a book and get carried away into the world of literature.
