My Students

I am a Reading teacher at a K-8 Center in Miami. I teach middle school reading to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that are struggling with reading. My school is a Title I school which means that about 90% of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. They are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families that struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than an average child, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.

Being the middle school reading teacher, I am responsible for helping my students improve their reading skills so they can be successful lifelong learners.

I know that my job is extremely important in helping them be successful in life. Therefore, I am always searching and seeking new reading strategies and resources to improve their reading and keep them motivated and engaged.

My students just need someone to believe in them and give them the tools to be successful. As Joseph Addison says "Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life."

My Project

Being a reading teacher, I incorporate technology in my classroom on a daily basis. The core reading program that we use in the classroom has a technology piece where students access that program online. In addition, I provide my students with other online reading programs that target specifically their reading deficiencies to help build those skills that they need to become more effective readers. Also, technology is fun, engaging, and motivates the students to learn. Right now, my school's technology has suffered from Hurricane Irma and we are in the need of more computers and laptops.

Being in Miami, I have many students that come from other countries and are learning English as a second language and recently, we have received many students from Puerto Rico that needed to leave their homes because of Hurricane Maria.

I realize that I really need to help them become acclimated to a new place while learning to speak, read, and write English. My students learning English are able to access programs where they can translate words from their native language to English, use online programs to learn English, build their English vocabulary, and learn how to read and pronounce English words. Technology will make this possible. Please help fund my project so I can help my students become better readers and really learn English well.
