My Students

Let's bring books into my classroom that my students can actually read! My classroom is full of bright, colorful and fun books but all my students can do is look at the pictures. Now they need books that are bright, colorful but also at their reading level!

My students are all in an intensive needs classroom in a public school.

They all have an Individualized Education Plan and need a lot of support throughout the day in order to be successful. My students have a range of disabilities including autism, developmental delay, emotional disturbance and speech and language disorders. All of my students have a paraprofessional with them at all times during their day, to ensure they get what they need during the day. All of my students partake in the general education classroom during the day. Some of my students are even in the general education classroom for 100% of their day, when the correct supports are in place for them! They all have their challenges and needs but also they each make the school community a better and brighter place.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of leveled texts that are at my students' reading ability. I teach grades Kindergarten through second grade and typically my students are behind grade level so therefore I am requesting a variety of texts in Kindergarten through the first grade level. These books will be used in a variety of ways in my classroom. First, my students will be able to read these books during silent reading time. Typically the books that are in classroom libraries are very hard for them but now they actually will be able to read the books instead of look at the pictures. Second, I will use these books during my guided reading lessons. Because there are ample amounts of books I am requesting, it will give me a lot of opportunities to work on a variety of reading skills such as fluency and comprehension.

This project is very important to the learning of my students.

Reading can be hard and overwhelming for students when they first learn how to read, especially if their peers are reading at a much faster pace. With these books, they will be able to feel successful while reading and also enjoy reading at the same time. Also, this project will not only help my students this year but my students for many years to come.
