Help me give my students this wonderful novel which relates to their lived experiences while educating them on the nuances of race, identity, and the critical choices we make and how they impact us and future generations.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When I first read The Vanishing Half, I was instantly reminded of the seminal novella “Passing” by Nella Larsen. I knew immediately that I wanted to pair The Vanihing Half with the movie based on Larsen’s “Passing” to offer a deeper reading of race in America and to highlight the importance of the choices we make and how they impact future generations, while also shaping our lives.
My hope with this project is to allow my students space to question their own relationship to race, and invite them to dig deeper into their ancestral history to help them bridge the space between themselves and those who came before them, to give them the tools with which to query their lived experiences today as they were shaped and put in motion by those who came before them.
In an educational system which is still lacking in options for reading materials that our students will mostly benefit from, and which does not solely rely on the assumed ‘classics,’ I have been on a mission to bring the most recent, more contemporary works of literature by people of color, and women, and other marginalized writers whose works are readily embraced by my students, all of who are eager for stories that relate to them, celebrate them, and offer a glimpse into their pasts.
