When do you begin preparing for the 8th grade math exam? Well, in the 6th grade! Do you remember math in middle school? Well it's possible that you were NOT using a calculator to graph your data, however, the math that our students must learn is far more complex than the one we learned 15 years ago.
Our students will be 6th graders this fall and are the 1st group of students in our school.
We are a new Brooklyn science middle school, opening our doors for the first time this fall. Our students will follow a STEM program in science class and we need the right calculators to help them understand the science they will master. Our students are open minded, intelligent, African-American, Caribbean-American and Latino in heritage. Several students will be new English learners as well as Special Education Students. Our school will provide an engaging learning environment in small classes with experience and creative teachers who "think out of the box." Our principal is a former science teacher who believes that all students can learn if they are provided a rich engaging environment with the right tools, taught by teachers who believe in what they do and teach with a passion to move mountains. Our Brooklyn middle school are preparing for the fall to welcome our graduating class of 2017.
My Project
I am requesting 30 calculators that will help our students to: sum, graph and calculate the math that we will be following in our STEM program. Our students will use the TI-34 MV calculators in math & science class, during their STEM program as well as for our Robotics club. Students will engage in the design of several STEM projects such as the design of robotics to help the disabled, the design of Dams as well as everyday applications for the use of a calculator. Our goal is to introduce several mathematical concepts in the 6th grade in order to ensure that students are able to learn, apply and master these concepts for 6th, 7th & 8th grade. We want students to become comfortable using a more advanced calculator at a younger age in order to increase their familiarity with such a device and to help decrease their concerns or fears using advance features found in such calculators. Learning how to properly use this calculator will build student confidence as they use this calculator to solve problems and design mathematical explanations in solving scientific concepts.
Mastering basic and more advance math concepts and applications will build a great deal of self-confidence and improve student test scores.
A major expense in any school budget are the tools needed to teach their students. This request is only for a class of 30 students and the cost is great, however, several classes will benefit from your donation. Our students lives will be changed for the better because they will receive adequate training on how to use these calculators, before high school.
