This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school functional academics. We are tasked with getting our students ready for the transition to adulthood. Our curriculum teaches core academics/ skills as they will be used in real life.

We prepare our students to live as independently as possible and for their future career goals.

Sitting, listening and reading about the skills isn’t enough, they need hands-on real-life experience. I love seeing the light bulb moments when a new skill clicks and they start to see their future goals within reach.

My Project

We are updating our classroom kitchens! A huge part of our functional curriculum is cooking and shopping. Our students practice the entire process of planning, shopping, purchasing, cooking, serving and clean up.

We walk to the grocery store and bring our purchases to class.

This can be difficult depending on how much we need. Having durable grocery bags and a wagon will be a huge help, especially for students with physical needs.

In addition to shopping and cooking, we also work on serving and how to share our cooking with others. We have been using disposable plates, utensils, cups and storage containers. This is a huge waste in both resources and cost. Students will learn both proper table etiquette as well as environmental responsibility.

These tools will be used to meet the students need for direct, food preparation and serving instructions. They get so much more out of hands-on learning. These life skills lessons will provide them with lessons in cooking, social skills, purchasing skills as well as social responsibility and teamwork.
