I teach 6th grade English at a Title I public charter school located in the city of Houston. Although many of my students are still learning English, they come to school full of enthusiasm.
For the overwhelming majority of students at my school, English is their second language, this makes English class and learning English Language Arts skills especially complicated.
However, ALL of my students are capable, ready, and willing to learn, they just need the right tools!
Over the last year of teaching in this area, I've seen these students rise to the occasion to overcome many obstacles on their path to college. They are 100% capable of academic success and I want to give them everything they need to achieve it!
My Project
Research shows that children surrounded by books at home develop into strong readers who are academically successful, but for most of my students, books are a luxury that their families can't afford. I would love to provide these incredible kids what they're missing at home by surrounding them with a library at school!
For my classroom library, I'm requesting books middle school students will love and learn from, as well as, clear plastic containers to keep the library as organized as possible, so students can find what they're looking for easily.
I'm also requesting a small desk to set up a check-in/check-out station for student librarians to run.
