My students need 35 copies of To Kill a Mockingbird to wrap up a unit on Democracy and equal rights. The students will read and discuss the book in their Literature Circle groups.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 7th grade students need 35 copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" for a novel study centered around democracy and rights for people of all cultures.
We finished reading Reginald Rose's "12 Angry Men" and Dean Walter Myers, "Monster." The students really enjoyed both books and had deep discussions about the judicial system and topics surrounding equality in America.
Our students come from varied backgrounds, but they are all excited to read this classic tale. They are enthusiastic readers and enjoy meeting every week with their Literature Circle to discuss their novels. We would like to begin reading this novel very soon, so if funded, that would help the school a great deal. They all read on different grade levels, but we will come together for this book which is sure to be the cherry on the cake for this exciting unit on "Democracy."
My Project
These materials will make a huge impact on my students because they are the perfect way to round out the unit. Students are eager to discuss civil rights and preconceived notions that sometimes members of society have on others and want contribute to making society equal for everyone.
They have already read and analyzed "Monster" and "12 Angry Men" and are eager to continue reading about this great theme of democracy.
Students will compare and contrast "Monster", "12 Angry Men" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by focusing on the time in which they were written, the characters and setting.
Once finished, the students will have the opportunity to view the film and compare and contrast the film to the book.
