Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of working with a fantastic group of 9th graders. They are incredibly hard working and take on any challenge I present them. All of my students have special needs- including health disabilities, learning disabilities and autism. In addition to their special needs many of my students are English Language Learners and/or Economically disadvantaged. Despite all the barriers, my students come to class ready and willing to accomplish any grade level task that I give them. It does not usually come easy to them but they never give up. They are truly my heroes.
My Project
All students deserve a quality education despite barriers they may face. In my small group, English Language Arts classroom, my special eduction students face a variety of factors that impact their ability to learn. All of my students are diagnosed with at least one disablity- including but not limited to- communication disabilities, learning disabilities, health disabilities and autism. In addition many of my students are English Lanuage learners and/or come from economically disadvantaged homes. All of these factors can impact the daily performance of a student within the classroom. Many of my students are reading well below expected grade level. In response to this, too often, the students are assigned books that may be at their reading level but not appropriate for their maturing age.
With these To Kill A Mockingbird Graphic Novels my students will have access to grade level appropriate texts and the same meaningful discussions are their peers.
By providing this abridged and illustrated version of the text I can help my students not only build their comprehension skills but also build their confidence. They will be able to speak with their peers about a high school level novel with confidence and understanding.
