Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most students live in low socio-economic households with two working parents. Many times students rush home after school because they must care for younger siblings while their parents work. As a result, so many students find refuge being in the school environment as it serves as a safe place. Here, students receive basic needs (food, clean clothes), student services (counseling, after-school programs), and the support of teachers who strive to develop a love of learning in all students.

During these middle-school years, I personally witness students growing and changing into knowledgeable more confident individuals.

Working with many Long-Term English Learners, I see tremendous growth in students' reading, writing, and speaking skills. Last year alone, over 40 of my students were Reclassified as Fluent English Proficient. This status is gained by passing the State ELPAC test, passing iReady (a computer-based reading assessment), and by receiving a C or better in English class.

Reclassifying is an advantage now and in the future. Students will no longer need to take additional English classes and can take electives instead. In high school, students will be on track with peers to graduate in 4 years. Students gain a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

My Project

Books, books, and more books-I'm so excited to have the opportunity to create a classroom library !! Most people assume that public schools have a well-stocked and up-to-date library for student use. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Two years ago, our school library was torn down and turned into a "media center". This means the books that were featured in our library are now floating around the district somewhere, and we are left with 10 computer stations that are left virtually untouched by students.

Reading is essential to student success.

Reading skills are needed at all levels of one's education and students must read to learn as they progress to high school and college where they must take charge of their own academic knowledge.

Reading teaches and reinforces skills in sentence structure, vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar, but it also allows students explore and learn about the world around us. Nonfiction pieces can take students around the world to learn about far away places. Works of fiction can open the creative minds of young people, and help foster future goals and dreams. A love of reading leads to a love of learning, and to invest in books, is to invest in the future. Thank you.
