My students need touch screen Chromebooks because they would be a valuable tool for students with special needs to have access to help prepare them and ensure their success in present as well as future learning.
Students who attend the school in which I teach at come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with over 93% of our school qualifying to receive free and reduced lunch and supported with Title 1 resources. The students that attend the school I teach at are very determined to learn all they can and are always striving to be the best they can be, even though daily they are faced with many challenges at both home and school that make learning a challenge for them. Many of the students at our school have to face harsh realities such as hunger, unsafe home environment, or not knowing where they will be sleeping at from one night to the next.
Many of the students here show enthusiasm when they come to school because they know that they are safe when they are in our building, and that we will address their basic needs as well as their education needs to the best of our ability.
We feel strongly about creating a fun and engaging learning environment for our students allowing them to grow, explore and learn new things, this preparing them for a greater chance of success.
My Project
Most students are very familiar with a wide variety of different forms of technology. In today’s day and age technology is used on a daily basis, in personal, as well as professional settings. I would like to be able to provide this technology for all students who enter my classroom, but particularly for my students who have a special need, or are living in an impoverished environment. What I would like to provide is technology for my students who would not otherwise be able to access the use of up to date technology. This would provide them the opportunity to get ahead of the learning curve rather than behind as our world continues to move forward in the technology revolution. I have observed students being more successful and motivated to learn when they are able to use technology in the classroom setting.
I have witnessed special needs students gaining confidence, as well as academic gains in areas that they have deficits in, and were not as successful in overcoming those deficits by conventional methods of learning alone.
Access to chromebooks would allow my students the opportunity to determine which device, or form of technology works best for their learning style. Then students would be able to use their prefered technology to help them become more knowledgeable in academic as well as technological advancements. The current technology that is available to students in my classroom is limited and is not as accessible to all students with special needs and those students who learn better through hands-on application, which devices that are equipped for apps found in the Google Store would provide endless resources for a variety of students needs.
