My students need hands-on astronomy tools, like 2 different planetariums, a moon model, and an instructional DVD, in order to better visualize the phases of the moon, constellations, Earth's orbit and its relationship to the sun and moon.
Have you ever sat in a science classroom and wondered how to make the pictures and words in the book come alive? Students will learn more from the material taught when it can actually be applied to hands-on experiences.
My students live in a small suburban town and many of them are considered low income.
They are extremely excited about leaning when the learning is a hands-on experience. They are truly appreciative of the equipment and technology they are given to work with and are extremely excited to be able to learn in new ways.
My Project
Bringing our Solar System into the classroom will help my students truly be able to understand the astronomy curriculum in a whole new way. I know that most, if not all, of my students will benefit greatly from the opportunity to learn from the planetarium and moon phase models. Many of my students will even remember the names of the moon phases for years to come. I expect that we will also create a love of star gazing as well.
The astronomy unit will be covered after the state Benchmark exam is taken.
Many of my students will be "mentally checked out" at that time. The more hands-on, exciting projects we can do to keep their attention, the better. Being able to see why and how the seasons change, how eclipses occur, what makes the moon look like it does on different days will impact them in way that will "stick".
