My Students

I teach 11th and 12th grade science and engineering at a rural Career and Technical Education center. My students are purpose driven hands-on learners who thrive when their learning is connected to real-world experiences. They come to class from a variety of programs including Construction, Welding, Automotive Technology, Graphic Arts and Programming. This year our class has been fortunate to be partnered with NASA, and given the opportunity to serve others, by engineering solutions to problems experienced by astronauts on the international space station.

My Project

As part of our NASA partnership students are asked to design new sleeping quarters for astronauts, radiation protection jackets and new material storage systems for the international space station. All of these projects include the production of fabric soft goods. Access to a sewing machine would allow the students to efficiently create quality prototypes and make their plans a reality.

The creation and testing of these prototypes would help these hands-on learners to experience science and engineering in an authentic way.

Through this program our students will not only learn content knowledge, but they will also practice developing professional relationships and self-direction.
