This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My geometry students will work together in creating spaceships in the unit of the next school year. They will create these out of the magnetic blocks, calculate the surface area and volume of these shapes, and explain their group process on a big poster. These students are mostly newcomers to the United States and lack consistent schooling experience. Having an activity like this at the beginning of the school year lets me assess who has had math experience in their background already without a shameful placement test.
Creating positive bonding experiences can help students who are shy about what math they know or don't know open up to others and gain confidence in mathematics discourse.
Calculating volume and surface area while working in a group will create a classroom culture of creativity. One that does not place students to compete with one another but rather uplifts one another’s ideas. We then will have students present their space ships in a gallery-walk around the room at the end of class, where students take turns presenting one on one, explaining their ships and calculations, and walking around asking others questions about others' ships.
