This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My school is dedicated to and leading the charge to meet the needs of a population of adults with disabilities who ranges from ages eighteen to twenty-one. The students who attend our school have completed a traditional high school and are seeking transition services. We provide a robust curriculum to support their vocational, academic and social-emotional needs. Students are empowered and enthusiastic about learning and that is reflected throughout the school.
Once students have completed the classes on campus, they have the ability to then enroll in the work program, which ultimately increases their chances of placement within the community to work for a partnered business.
Our goal for each student is to gain the skills necessary to become as independent as possible within their communities upon graduation.
My classroom is a Retail Lab, here students learn skills which would be necessary to work in a retail or a variety of settings. Students are taught essential skills necessary to work in a store such as how to price items, how to stock shelves, how to fold shirts with a folding board and most importantly how to provide friendly service to customers.
The goal of this project is to provide us with a commercial grade garment bag rack and a steamer.
Acquisition of these items would allow my students the opportunity to learn to use them and provide an additional layer of service for the students who shop in the store. Our school store sells a myriad of items which students would like to purchase with the PBIS (school) money. We receive donations of clothing which students are then able to purchase. Our students are all young adults and are interested in purchasing clothing items such as dresses for formal occasions and suits. When students purchase these items, it would be beneficial to put their special occasion attire into a protective garment bag. Additionally, if a student would like to buy an item that is wrinkled, student employees can provide them with the option of having it steamed. We are preparing all of our students for their transition into their society and workplace, having a professional appearance is important. Funding this project will give us access to items which will used consistently and supports the needs of all students.
