To Calculate or Not to Calculate

My students need 10 TI-3-X IIS Scientific Calculators.

I teach Honors Pre-Calculus and Advanced Placement Calculus AB to 11th and 12th graders at a high need school in MA, with a student population of approximately 80% free and reduced lunch.

Most of our students do not own calculators nor can they afford them. However, in Pre-Calculus they need to master concepts that require the use of a calculator. The students need to master these concepts to pass the class and pass the college entrance exams for math. It is important the students understand and master these concepts so they do not need to take remedial classes in college. Taking remedial classes requires additional funds and time while at college.

I have a few calculators for the class, but need 10 more to make a class set. Velcro attaches the calculators to the desk top so that students in all the classes can use them. I monitor the calculators to make sure they do not go missing. By having access to the calculators the students will be able to calculate and understand trig functions, log and natural log function, in addition to operations with higher order polynomials, which are necessary to pass the college entrance exams. Without these skills the students will have to take remedial classes in college. Tests have shown that there is a high correlation with remedial classes and drop out rates among college students. Passing the college entrance exams helps to raise their confidence as they begin their collegiate careers.

Your help by donating the calculators will ensure that my high need students will have the same opportunities as students with calculators. They will be able to master these essential concepts and enter college taking the college math classes necessary for graduation without requiring additional funds or time. Without this necessary tool some of our at risk students may not take the steps necessary to take and pass the college entrance exams, and give up all hope of college.
