My kiddos are 10th and 11th grade students, many of whom hail from high poverty homes in rural West Virginia. The majority of my students have some sort of learning disability, especially ADD and Autism. If you watched my classes most days, you would see tapping fingers and wiggling legs. They try so very hard to focus but in many cases can't and the more distracted they become, the higher their stress levels. When their stress levels get high, they cannot learn.
With my kiddos, they need high interest, varied materials to make learning possible.
We use all types of learning strategies to engage their minds and sometimes it takes a variety of approaches to make learning stick.
My Project
Students will be able to read, enjoy and understand Shakespeare's longest play, Hamlet, through the use of graphic novels and side-by-side versions of the play. By including different editions, the kiddos will have different resources to connect with which will improve comprehension.
Was the ghost right about his death?
By comparing Shakespeare's original text with graphic novel and side-by-side interpretations, students will be able to create meaning without as much struggle. They will use the literature as foundation material for their research project which is a graduation requirement. The better they understand the play, the easier this project will be.
