Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 22 students attend a Title I school and are all learning English as a second language. Although their community is characterized as underserved, my students come to school with positive energy and are excited to learn to speak and read in English!

It is astonishing to see how thirsty they are to read new books with great stories.

They also love creating their own stories and are super curious about math! My students enjoy coming to school every day. I try and make learning fun throughout the year, so they continue to have a positive school experience!

My Project

I am currently at an institute at the University of Columbia where I am learning so much about the effective teaching of writing. One thing that has stood out is the importance of mentor texts. In order for students to become brilliant writers, they need to be able to orally tell stories.

For students to be great oral storytellers, they need to hear great stories.

These books will serve not only to be read to and read by students, but also serve as mentor texts for students to use to support their writing. Not only am I excited to read these books to my students, I am excited to see the progress they will make in their writing.
