Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Students
Our grades 5-7 school, located in Hollywood CA, is diverse by design.
Students and staff members are all from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We truly reflecting the beautiful patchwork of Los Angeles. When BLM protests happened last year, it happened in our backyard-figuratively and literally. Students described not being able to play in their yard because of the tear gas and they described the chaos and constant noise of sirens and helicopters. We had many difficult and painful conversations together, just trying to make sense of a world that seemed out of control.
It has been almost a year and a half since the protests over the killing of George Floyd. During the summer of 2020, myself and many of my colleagues on campus participated in workshops, attended lectures, and joined book clubs focusing on racial justice. We began the work of examining our own biases. While Social Justice and Social Emotional Learning is the lens through which all student learning happens in our classrooms, I believe that this work must continue so that we can be better educators-and better humans.
My Project
I would like to create a teacher lending library of professional books focused around the topics of Equity (BIPOC/LGBTQ+/Gender), Social Justice, and Culturally Responsive Teaching. I hope to have a dedicated time during weekly staff meetings for teachers to share what they are reading and make book recommendations to others. From this, I am sure we then will continue the work of how to best address social justice issues and equity on our campus.
Teachers are natural lifelong learners and it's important we model this learning to our students every day.
Therefore, this lending library will be kept in a high traffic area so that students see teachers and staff browsing the library and checking out books.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
