Our school is in its 19th year. It focuses on science and uses a year-round schedule, which means students attend 9 weeks of school and then have 3 weeks off. Intersession, similar to summer school, is offered during 3 breaks. We have a unique science Inquiry Zone for our students. 80.4% of our students qualifies for free or reduced lunch. 30.5% of our students qualify for English language services. 10.9% of our students qualify for special education services.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and neighborhoods from our city.
In my classroom alone, six different languages are represented by my students. Less than half of my students attended pre-kindergarten in our school district.
My Project
Every student in my class practices reading independently each day. We started the year with students reading for one minute. As they improved, the expectation increased. They are working on independently reading for seven minutes! By the end of kindergarten, they should be able to read independently for 15 minutes.
I would like to increase the variety of books for our daily independent reading practice.
My students have varied skills and interests. The books they read should reflect that.
My students are working on reading familiar sight words as well as decoding new words using sounds. Having these books will increase excitement and opportunities to read independently!
