This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you all remember your artwork being hung on the refrigerator or stored in a special drawer. Unfortunately with budget cuts and other school needs, we are so limited on Construction paper students are not getting to create as many memorable works of art.

My students are hard working, fun, creative, brilliant transitional and general education kindergarten , who try so hard to do so well.

My students are English language learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged. This school is a 100% free lunch school. The children are growing up in hard times. The standards of education are so much higher than when we were in school, and yet their opportunities are more limited than ours. Parents in our neighborhood want the best for their children, as do the teachers. They want their children to enjoy school and continue onto college and careers. However, due to the budget cuts, the children are getting a great education, but they are not getting the supplies, technology, and hands-on experiences they need. As a teacher I spend a good amount of my little paycheck each month to help my students have great experiences and memories. The children need supplies, materials and more to help across the curriculum.

My Project

Today reality hit me when I asked for construction paper, (it's rationed in the office) and I got very few and limited colors. I was told today that it is very expensive and we are very limited. I also really needed the bigger sized paper and we don't order that at all. So again I had to run out to the school supply store for a basic essentials for a transitional kindergarten classroom. It is just paper. I also use the paper for art and crafts with big buddies and teaching Social Studies units (community, accepting differences, transportation, family, friendship and more). We also can create cute animals with the paper tubes. I like to use art to teach math and science. For patterns the children make 3D patterns, photo patterns and more. For shapes we create robots, clowns, houses and more. There is so much to do with Art and Math together to help the children see how math can be used across the curriculum. Without the basics of Construction paper I am very limited

I am just asking for a basic need for TK and kindergarten.

Construction paper and paper tubes. My students really need the opportunity to take home projects (based across the curriculum) they created in class and place them on the refrigerator.
