Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. 25% of our students are currently an English Language Learner. Our Special Education students make up 10% of the entire site.
My students are interested in learning about title 9 and women in sports.
We are pairing up with our school library to create a title 9 section about women in sports. Hopefully, through working on creating this section my students will learn the importance of Women's role in sports.
Currently, my special education class is made of myself and our paraeducator with a class of sixteen students. As the head of the dept and our site being short staffed in all of Special Education I see that my students are in need of supplemental assistance.
My Project
My co-teacher in my classroom is our flag football coach he runs a coed team. I was explaining to many of my students what Title 9 was. When we went to the library, she told that we did not have books about Title 9. She helped the students find information on the internet. Many of my students wanted to learn about female athletes. We embarked on an internet research project about Title 9 and famous women athletes.
My students were realizing the importance of Title 9 and what it meant for sports today.
Many of my student's research on the women athletes that we are buying books about. We were also talking about how much further women athletes have to go.
After the projects were finished my students felt it was important for other students at our school to learn the importance of Title 9 and female athletes. To quote one of my students "If we don't learn now we will never be able to grow up and fix it". I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. We are lucky to have a wonderful librarian who is working with my students to create this section in the library. Many of my students would like to create other sections about women's rights and other issues we are facing in the world today. So we are going to be working with her to create these sections hopefully with your help. I hope to see many students reading books about how far women have come in sports and how far they still have to come. I am sure that these books about amazing female athletes will be used often and really make a difference. Thank you for being a part of educating our future students.
